Winter Appeal Mailing

ASYLUM WELCOME • December 2022

Designing the annual Winter Appeal for Asylum Welcome. This year’s Appeal focused on the importance of the youth work done by the charity in response to a huge increase in the number of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and young people (aged 14-25) helped by Asylum Welcome in 2022.

The letter featured a case study of an 18-year-old, Sayed, who had found accommodation and had been reunited with his brother thanks to the intervention of Asylum Welcome. An A5 insert explained the benefits of the weekly Youth Club Venda – a safe space for young people to meet and make friends, play games and put aside their daily troubles.

The mailing contained a Christmas card which featured the drawing of Aynodeen, one of the young people who attends Venda. It was an enjoyable challenge to work with Aynodeen’s original drawing and embellish it with colour to make a striking image for the card. The bird image was repeated on a gift tag which supporters could fill in and send back with their donation to be added to a gift handed out to young people over the festive season.

650 copies of the mailing were sent out to supporters in early December, and an emailed Mailchimp version followed to those supporters who have opted to only receive digital communications. The Appeal raised around £18,000 (a 16% increase from the previous mailing) and donations were still coming in throughout February.
